Superannuation

What is it?

Superannuation (super) is an investment scheme designed to provide money for your retirement.

If you have worked during your stay in Australia and earned over $450 over a continuous rolling 4 week period, your employer will have contributed 9% of your gross weekly earnings to a superannuation fund on your behalf (You will not be entitled to superannuation contributions if you earned less than the prescribed amount).

The good news is once you leave Australia permanently and your temporary visa expires you are entitled to claim back your superannuation. Australian and New Zealand residents can not claim back superannuation.
Here at Backpacker Tax Refunds we will do all the hard work for you. We will track down your superannuation and lodge a claim on your behalf. You just sit back and wait for your refund!

How can I claim back my Superannuation?

Once you have departed Australia permanently and your Australian Visa has expired or been cancelled (for working holiday makers on a 417 visa this is normally a year after you have entered Australia) you can lodge a superannuation claim.

In order for us to prepare and lodge your superannuation claim you will be required to complete our DASPAuthority Form and the form called Power of Attorney - Appointment of Agent and post * them back to us. You must also include certified copies of the following documents:

  1. A copy of your arrival stamp
  2. A copy of your departure stamp
  3. A copy of the photograph page from your passport
  4. A copy of your visa label (if you have one)
  5. 1 other form of ID, such as, Drivers Licence, Bank Card, Proof of Age Card, etc

Once we are in receipt of your completed forms we will contact you via telephone or email to discuss this with you further.

*Your completed DASP Authority form can be forwarded to us via email, fax or post, however, your Power of Attorney-Appointment of Agent form and all your certified documents must be original copies and must be posted to us (photocopies will not be accepted by your superannuation funds)

How much will it cost me?

Our fee for preparing and lodging your superannuation claim is a flat fee of $143. This fee will be deducted automatically from your refund. If your refund is less than $143 then you will still be required to pay our fee via an alternative method.

How long will it take for me to receive my refund?

Once we receive all your documents we will prepare and lodge your claim for you. Once your paperwork is received by the Superannuation Fund office the processing time is normally 6-8 weeks, however, please note that processing can take longer in the following circumstances:

  • If your employer has not paid superannuation on your behalf
  • If you have ceased employment in tha last 3 months your employer may still have outstanding contributions to make to your fund
  • If there are delays in your employer confirming who your superannuation was paid to (Fund Name and Member Number)
  • If your superannuation fund request additional information which we have to obtain from you or an employer.

We will regularly keep you updated on our progress.
